NOLEDG defines the gifted child as having one or more of the following characteristics:
superior intellectual ability
specific academic aptitude
creative or productive thinking
leadership ability
exceptional ability in the visual or performing arts.
Before their children are even formally identified as gifted, parents often need clues to
begin their own identification process. What are some signs that my child, indeed, is
gifted? Am I the only one with a child like this? How do I find out that my child is
gifted? Many web sites provide overviews and checklists that will help parents
answer these questions.
These include:
Stephanie Tolan's classic essay
Is It A Cheetah? which addresses the characteristics of a gifted child in a regular
classroom.
GT-Cybersource also provides parents with clues for gifted identification and extends
that information to include testing, mentoring and recommended readings.
